Kody Alec Clemens was born on May 15, 1996, in Houston, Texas. He is the son of former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens. Clemens attended Memorial High School in Houston, Texas, where he played baseball and achieved a .553 batting average in his senior year. He was recognized as a first-team all-district selection in 2013 and received Perfect Game Honorable Mention in 2013 and 2014. Clemens later committed to the University of Texas at Austin to play college baseball for the Texas Longhorns.
During his collegiate career, Clemens showed consistent development. As a freshman in 2016, he recorded a .242 batting average with five home runs. In 2017, despite undergoing Tommy John surgery, he continued to contribute as the team’s designated hitter. His junior year in 2018 marked a significant turning point, as he batted .352 with 23 home runs, earning him the Big 12 Player of the Week award. This performance also led to him being named a finalist for prestigious awards such as the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. That same year, he was recognized as the ABCA Co-Player of the Year and a First-Team All-American.
Clemens began his professional journey after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the third round (79th overall pick) of the 2018 MLB Draft, signing for a $600,000 bonus. He quickly progressed through the minor league system, playing for the Single-A West Michigan Whitecaps and High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers in 2018. He was an organizational All-Star by MiLB.com and a Gold Glove winner at second base. By 2019, he had advanced to Double-A Erie SeaWolves. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he played for Team Texas in the Constellation Energy League, where he was named the Most Valuable Player for his team. His consistent performance led to his placement on the Tigers’ 40-man roster in November 2021 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. He made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on May 31, 2022. In 2023, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies and later to the Minnesota Twins in 2025.
