Kristen Carroll Wiig was born on August 22, 1973, in Canandaigua, New York. Her father, Jon J. Wiig, managed a lake marina, and her mother, Laurie J. Johnston, was an artist. She has an older brother named Erik. The family relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and later to Rochester, New York, where Wiig graduated from Brighton High School. She initially studied art at the University of Arizona, where an elective acting class led her to pursue performing. She moved to Los Angeles, gaining experience with improv and sketch comedy at The Groundlings, a notable comedy troupe.
Wiig joined the cast of NBC’s sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 2005. During her seven-season tenure, which ended in 2012, she became known for creating memorable characters such as the Target clerk, Doonese, Penelope, Nancy Pelosi, and Suze Orman. Her work on SNL earned her four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her film career began with a debut in Unaccompanied Minors in 2006, followed by roles in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up (2007) and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007). She also appeared in films like Whip It (2009) and Adventureland (2009), while also lending her voice to animated features such as Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009) and Despicable Me (2010).
A significant milestone in Wiig’s career came in 2011 when she co-wrote and starred in the critically and commercially successful film Bridesmaids. This film earned her nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. After leaving SNL, Wiig maintained a visible presence in Hollywood, taking on roles in films like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), The Skeleton Twins (2014), and Ghostbusters (2016). She has continued her voice acting work in the How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me film series. Her recent projects include the film Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) and the co-written and co-starred film Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021). In 2024, she produced and starred in the series Palm Royale, for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Time magazine recognized her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in both 2012 and 2025.
