Four-time Olympic medallist Kylie Masse made history when she became the first Canadian woman to win a swimming world title in 2017. After capturing gold in the 100m backstroke at the FINA World Championships in Budapest and also setting a world record of 58.10 seconds, she took home a bronze medal as part of the mixed medley relay team in 4x100m. The swimming superstar won bronze in the 100m backstroke in her Olympic debut in Rio, also setting a national record, and won three more medals during her second Olympics at Tokyo 2020, capturing the silver in both the individual 100m and 200m backstroke events along with a bronze medal in 4x100m relay.
In 2019 Masse made history once again when she successfully defended her 100m backstroke title at the World Championships, becoming the first ever Canadian swimmer to win consecutive golds in the same event.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, Masse first started swimming competitively when she was 10 years old after attending summer swim team with her siblings. After swimming at a young age for the Windsor Essex Swim team, she was recruited by the University of Toronto swim team and won the award for the CIS swimmer of the year in both 2015 and 2016 following her rapidly improving performances. Masse qualified to the 100m backstroke at her first senior international event where she was the youngest swimmer in the field at 19. She went on to win the gold medal, which gave the swimmer a huge boost in her confidence and propelled her to even better results. In 2016 she qualified for the Canadian team for the Summer Olympics, and the rest is history.
