About

Latosha Brown was born in Selma, Alabama, to a farming family. Growing up, her grandmother, born in 1910 and denied voting rights for much of her life, profoundly influenced her understanding of political power. As a child, Brown frequently questioned who held authority in various settings, demonstrating an early fascination with leadership and influence. She attended Selma High School and later Auburn University at Montgomery, where she studied political science and government. During this period, she became a mother and took a job at a clothing shop, where she began engaging customers in discussions about civil rights and social justice topics.

Brown’s dedication to activism led her to bid for political office, including a run for the Alabama State Board of Education’s fifth district seat in 1998. After a week-long ballot count, she lost by fewer than 200 votes, and a subsequent discovery of 800 uncounted ballots in Wilcox County highlighted systemic voting irregularities. In 2002, she ran for the Alabama House of Representatives District 67 seat, contesting the election due to alleged voter irregularities, including crossover voting, missing voter lists, and votes from deceased individuals. These experiences further solidified her commitment to protecting voting rights and ensuring fair electoral processes.

In 2004, Brown founded TruthSpeaks Consulting, Inc., a philanthropy advisory firm in Atlanta, GA. She later co-founded the Black Voters Matter Fund in 2016, an organization dedicated to increasing power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities in the Southern United States. Her work with Black Voters Matter has been instrumental in significant voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts in key elections, notably during the 2017 U.S. Senate special election in Alabama and the 2020–21 Georgia state elections. She is also the founder of the Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium, established in 2018, aiming to create new philanthropic models to increase investments for Black girls and women in the South.
