Mateo Kovačić was born on May 6, 1994, in Linz, Austria, to Bosnian Croat parents. He began his youth career at LASK, attracting attention from major European clubs by age 13. His family relocated to Zagreb, Croatia, where he joined Dinamo Zagreb’s academy. Kovačić made his professional debut for Dinamo Zagreb in November 2010 at 16 years old, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the league’s history. He quickly became a first-team regular, contributing to two consecutive Prva HNL titles in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, and also helped the team reach the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in 12 years. He was named Croatian Football Hope of the Year in December 2011.
In January 2013, Kovačić transferred to Inter Milan, where he continued to develop his skills as a central midfielder. He later moved to Real Madrid in August 2015, playing a part in significant achievements, including three UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, as well as a La Liga title in 2016-17. His career progression continued with a move to Chelsea in 2018, initially on loan before a permanent transfer in 2019. At Chelsea, he added a UEFA Europa League title (2018-19), another Champions League title (2020-21), a UEFA Super Cup (2021), and the FIFA Club World Cup (2021) to his honors, and was recognized as Chelsea Player of the Year for the 2019–20 season.
Kovačić joined current club Manchester City in June 2023. In his inaugural season, he contributed to Manchester City winning the Premier League in 2023-24, the UEFA Super Cup in 2023, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023. He has also been a key player for the Croatia national team since his senior debut in 2013, participating in multiple FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, 2024). He reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup final and the 2023 UEFA Nations League final with Croatia, earning his 100th international cap in June 2024.
