Born on May 29, 1972, in Mobile, Alabama, Laverne Cox was raised by a single mother and grandmother. She began her academic pursuits studying creative writing and dance at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama. Her education continued at Indiana University Bloomington for two years before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, where she shifted her focus from dance to acting. During her time at Marymount Manhattan College, she also pursued Fashion Merchandising Management at the Fashion Institute of Technology. These early experiences provided a diverse foundation for her later career.
Cox achieved significant recognition for her role as Sophia Burset in the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black” (2013-2019). This portrayal led to her becoming the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy in an acting category.
