Lee Smith was born on August 8, 1986, in Morley, West Yorkshire, England. His rugby journey began early, playing amateur rugby league for Drighlington before joining the Leeds Rhinos academy as a teenager. His talent was recognized when he was named Senior Academy Player of the Year in 2003, a year that also saw his team win the Grand Final. Smith represented England at both U17 and U18 levels, demonstrating early potential for a significant career in professional rugby. In 2005, he made his professional debut for the Leeds Rhinos first team against Wakefield Trinity, marking the start of a notable playing career.
Smith established himself as a key player for Leeds Rhinos from 2005 to 2009, making 104 appearances and scoring 51 tries. During this period, he played a crucial role in the Rhinos’ multiple Super League victories in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012, as well as a World Club Challenge win in 2008. His versatility allowed him to play multiple positions, including wing, centre, and fullback. A significant career turning point occurred in 2009 when he switched codes to Rugby Union, joining London Wasps. However, he returned to Leeds Rhinos in 2010, continuing his Rugby League career before stints with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Leigh Centurions, and Bradford Bulls.
His international career for England spanned from 2006 to 2009, where he made 8 appearances, scoring 7 tries. Smith participated in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup and the 2009 Four Nations tournament. After officially retiring from professional rugby in 2018, Smith transitioned into new professional ventures.
