Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham was born on May 13, 1986, in New York City, to artist parents Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons. She pursued her education at Oberlin College, completing a degree in creative writing in 2008. During her time at Oberlin, Dunham began developing short films and web series, often exploring themes of sexual enlightenment and personal relationships in a mumblecore style. In 2009, she gained a cult following for her web series “Delusional Downtown Divas” and released her first feature film, “Creative Nonfiction.” These early works demonstrated her distinctive voice and paved the way for her breakthrough.

Her career gained significant momentum with the 2010 semi-autobiographical independent film “Tiny Furniture.” Dunham wrote, directed, and starred in the film, which earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and was a Best Narrative Feature winner at South by Southwest. This success led to a blind script deal with HBO, where she partnered with Jennifer Konner and Judd Apatow to create the critically acclaimed series “Girls.” The show, which she created, wrote, directed, and starred in as Hannah Horvath from 2012 to 2017, garnered her multiple Emmy Award nominations and two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2012. In 2013, Dunham became the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Comedy Series.

Beyond “Girls,” Dunham has expanded her work as a producer, writer, and director. She published her first book, “Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned’,” in 2014, which became a New York Times Best Seller. In 2015, she co-founded the feminist online newsletter “Lenny Letter” with Jenni Konner, which featured influential essays from various public figures. Her filmography also includes acting roles in “This Is 40” (2012) and “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), and writing/directing credits for “Catherine Called Birdy” (2022) and “Sharp Stick” (2022). She also created and starred in the Netflix series “Too Much” in 2025.
