Loh Kean Yew made history in 2021, becoming the first Singaporean to win a men’s singles world title at the BWF World Championships, where he notably defeated top players Viktor Axelsen and Srikanth Kidambi despite sustaining an ankle injury. This monumental achievement followed a pivotal month-long training camp in Dubai with Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen earlier that year, which propelled him to victories at the Dutch Open and Hylo Open. His early career saw him debut internationally for Singapore at the 2015 SEA Games, securing a men’s singles bronze medal. He further built his resume with wins including the National Junior Grand Prix Finals (Under-12) in 2009, the Singapore International Series in 2014, the Malaysia International and Singapore International in 2017, and the Mongolia International Tournament in 2018.
The 2023 season saw Loh maintain his strong performance, reaching the final of the Asia Championships to secure a men’s singles silver medal, and also becoming a runner-up at the Korea Open. Entering 2024, Loh ended a period without a title by triumphing at the Madrid Spain Masters. His competitive form continued as he reached the men’s singles runner-up position at the Thailand Masters earlier that year. A highlight of 2024 was his impactful run at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he reached the men’s singles quarter-finals, matching a national record set in 2004.
Demonstrating continued momentum into 2025, Loh Kean Yew has already achieved a men’s singles runner-up finish at the German Open and secured a bronze medal at the Asian Championships. He capped off a strong start to the year by winning the Taipei Open, marking his first title win in over a year and solidifying his position as a formidable presence on the international badminton circuit.
