Luenell Campbell

Luenell Campbell, born Luenell Batson on March 12, 1959, in Tollette, Arkansas, began her performing arts journey early. After her father’s murder and her mother’s large family, she was adopted and moved to Castro Valley, California, where she took up the name Luenell Campbell. Campbell pursued theatrical studies at Chabot Junior College and California State University at Hayward, now California State University, East Bay. Her early career involved performing with the Oakland Ensemble Theatre and entering the world of stand-up comedy. Her exposure grew through appearances on KSBT (Soul Beat) television in the 1990s, where she held various roles including video DJ and host of ‘Club 37’. Campbell also secured minor roles in film and television, beginning with ‘So I Married an Axe Murderer’ in 1993 and ‘The Rock’ in 1996, where she was credited as Luenell Campbell.

After a hiatus to raise her daughter, Da’Nelle, born in 1996, Campbell returned to her career in 2004 with a role on ‘The Tracy Morgan Show’. A pivotal moment in her career was her role in the 2006 film ‘Borat: Cultural Learning of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’, where she played a memorable character alongside Sacha Baron Cohen. This performance significantly raised her profile. Following ‘Borat’, Campbell appeared as herself in ‘Katt Williams: American Hustle’ in 2007, further establishing her stand-up comedy career. She continued to take on regular small roles in popular series such as ‘The Boondocks’, ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, and ‘Californication’.

Campbell’s filmography expanded with roles in ‘Think Like a Man’ (2012) and ‘Taken 2’ (2012). Her voice acting work includes ‘Hotel Transylvania’ (2012), and she has contributed to television series like ‘Hacks’ (2021–2025), ‘Ten Year Old Tom’ (2021–2023), and ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ (2020). Luenell has also received recognition for her stand-up comedy, performing in ‘Snoop Dogg Presents: The Bad Girls of Comedy’ and continuing to tour comedy venues. She diversified her work by posing nude for Penthouse magazine in 2017. More recently, she released the Netflix special ‘Chappelle’s Home Team – Luenell: Town Business’ in 2023, where she also served as a writer.
