Luis Figo

Luís Figo reshaped what it meant to be a modern winger, blending pace, trickery, and vision across three of Europe’s biggest leagues. Born on 4 November 1972 in Lisbon, the only child of António Caeiro Figo and Maria Joana Pestana Madeira, he grew up in the working-class district of Cova da Piedade in Almada. He started as a street footballer at Os Pastilhas before joining the Sporting CP academy at 12, sharpening his technique through futsal along the way.

His senior debut for Portugal came on 16 October 1991 against Luxembourg, aged just 18, the same year he lifted a FIFA World Youth Championship as leader of Portugal’s ‘Golden Generation’. At club level he starred for Sporting CP, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan, winning four La Liga titles, a Champions League trophy, four Serie A titles, the Portuguese Cup, and a host of Spanish and Italian cups and super cups. His 2000 transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid set a world record fee of €62 million.

Figo’s individual honours confirm his stature: the 2000 Ballon d’Or, 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year, and a place in Pelé’s FIFA 100 list in 2004. With 127 caps and 32 goals for Portugal, a one-time record, he led his country to the Euro 2004 final and the 2006 World Cup semi-finals, and ranks second among Portuguese assist providers in the UEFA Champions League with 15.

Regarded as one of the greatest wingers in football history, Figo has since lent his stature to wider roles, including a short-run candidacy for the 2015 FIFA presidential elections, remaining a statesman-like figure in the global game.
