Lutalo Muhammad

Lutalo Muhammad was born on June 3, 1991, in Walthamstow, London. He began practicing taekwondo at the age of three, training under his father, Wayne Muhammad, who had over four decades of martial arts experience. Muhammad’s early dedication to the sport laid the foundation for a successful competitive career. In 2008, he received the GLL Sports Foundation Award and won gold at the German Open, competing in the youth -78kg category. He continued to compete internationally, earning silver at the 2008 British Open in Manchester and bronze at the 2009 Belgian Open.

Muhammad joined the GB Academy in the summer of 2011, marking a significant step in his professional development. He continued to achieve podium finishes, including silver at the 2011 Dutch Open and bronze at the 2011 Croatia Open. In 2012, he achieved significant success, winning a gold medal in the -87kg class at the European Taekwondo Championships in Manchester. His career reached an Olympic level when he represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, securing a bronze medal in the -80kg category. This achievement was particularly notable given the selection controversy surrounding his participation.

Following his Olympic debut, Muhammad maintained a high level of performance, earning gold at the 2013 World Grand Prix Final in Manchester and another gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Championships in Edinburgh. He continued his Olympic journey at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where he won a silver medal in the -80kg category, further cementing his place as a leading figure in British taekwondo. After a distinguished career, Lutalo Muhammad announced his retirement from competitive taekwondo in September 2022. He has since transitioned into media work, including punditry for the BBC, and continues to engage audiences through motivational speaking.
