Marlon Moraes, born on April 26, 1988, in Nova Friburgo, Brazil, began his martial arts journey with Muay Thai at the age of seven and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 15. He achieved national success in Muay Thai in Brazil, securing two National Championships before transitioning to mixed martial arts professionally in 2007. Moraes competed in various organizations in his early career, notably in Xtreme Fighting Championships, where he won via unanimous decision at XFC 15 in 2011 and secured a knockout victory at XFC 17 in 2012.
His significant career progression began in 2012 when he signed with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), the original incarnation of the PFL. He made a strong debut by defeating former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres via split decision at WSOF 1 in November 2012. Moraes quickly established himself in the promotion, winning the inaugural WSOF Bantamweight Championship at WSOF 9 in March 2014 by unanimous decision against Josh Rettinghouse. He successfully defended this title five times against opponents including Cody Bollinger (2014), Josh Hill (2015, 2016), Sheymon Moraes (2015), and Joseph Barajas (2016). Moraes vacated his WSOF Bantamweight Championship in January 2017 after becoming a free agent.
In April 2017, Moraes signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), marking a major turning point in his career. Despite a split decision loss in his UFC debut against Raphael Assunção at UFC 212 in June 2017, he quickly rebounded with a split decision win over John Dodson in November 2017 and a Performance of the Night knockout of Aljamain Sterling in December 2017. He continued to impress in the UFC with notable wins, including a first-round knockout of Jimmie Rivera in 2018 and a guillotine choke submission victory over Raphael Assunção in their 2019 rematch, both earning him Performance of the Night bonuses. Moraes challenged for the vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship at UFC 238 in June 2019, though he lost to Henry Cejudo. He later secured a split decision victory over Jose Aldo at UFC 245 in December 2019. After additional fights in the UFC and Professional Fighters League, Moraes announced his retirement from MMA in April 2022 and again in June 2023, subsequently beginning a career in law enforcement and being sworn in as a police officer in Davie, Florida, in May 2024.
