About

Magnus Midtbø, born on September 18, 1988, in Bergen, Norway, began his climbing journey at the age of 12. Just one year later, he won the Norwegian Youth Championship, marking the early onset of a distinguished career. In 2002, he on-sighted his first 8a (5.13b) sport climbing route, ‘Øgletryne,’ near his hometown. Midtbø quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the climbing world, earning recognition for his exceptional skill and dedication. His competitive career saw him achieve significant milestones, including winning the World Youth Championships in Beijing in 2005. Following his high school graduation in 2007, Midtbø moved to Innsbruck, Austria, to train alongside other elite climbers such as David Lama, Jakob Schubert, and Anna Stöhr, further honing his abilities.

Throughout his career, Midtbø consistently pushed the boundaries of rock climbing. In August 2010, he completed the challenging route ‘Ali Hulk sit start extension’ in Rodellar, Spain. By May 2013, he had on-sighted ‘Cosi fan tutte,’ graded at 8c+ (5.14c), also in Rodellar. A notable achievement was his redpoint of ‘Papichulo’ at Oliana, graded 9a+ (5.15a), in March 2015. He held the Nordic champion title for seven consecutive years (2005–2011) and was the Norwegian champion for 11 consecutive years (2005–2015). Midtbø also earned World Cup podiums and a bronze medal at the 2013 World Games in Cali, in the lead discipline. He retired from competition climbing in May 2017, choosing to focus on other aspects of his climbing passion.

Post-retirement from competitive climbing, Midtbø has carved out a successful media career. He launched an eponymous YouTube channel, which has amassed over 3.01 million subscribers as of August 2025, making it one of the most-watched climbing channels globally. Through this platform, he shares his climbing experiences, training insights, and collaborates with other prominent figures in the climbing and fitness communities. He founded Rungne, a brand dedicated to producing climbing gear such as chalk and apparel. His media presence extends to appearances on television shows like ‘Der Deutsche Meister’ in 2013, where he won the salmon ladder challenge, and ‘American Ninja Warrior: USA vs. The World’ in 2020, representing Team Europe. In 2022, he gained viral attention for a video documenting his free solo climbing experience with Alex Honnold. Magnus Midtbø continues to influence millions by blending elite performance with compelling storytelling, equipping others to pursue their climbing goals.
