Lynn Hill has redefined rock climbing possibilities, inspiring generations with her pioneering ascents and advocacy for gender equality in the sport. After making the first free ascent of ‘Ophir Broke’ (5.12d) in Colorado in 1979, marking it as the hardest route ever climbed by a woman at that time, Lynn Hill demonstrated an extraordinary talent for challenging physically demanding routes. Her pioneering spirit continued through the early 1980s as she established numerous free climbing routes in significant locations such as Joshua Tree National Park. In 1984, she achieved the first on-sight first ascent of ‘Yellow Crack’ (5.12c) and ‘Vandals’ (5.13a) in the Shawangunks, with ‘Vandals’ standing as the hardest route on the East Coast at the time.
Her legacy of pioneering ascents and advocacy for inclusivity continues to inspire new generations of climbers worldwide.
