Born in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, on May 31, 1989, Marco Reus began his football journey with local club Post SV Dortmund in 1994, joining the youth ranks of Borussia Dortmund in 1996. He remained with BVB’s youth system until 2006 before moving to Rot Weiss Ahlen. At Rot Weiss Ahlen, Reus progressed from the second team, featuring in the Westphalia league and scoring goals in his initial appearances. By 2007, he had broken into the first team, playing in the German third division and achieving promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2008–09. During this season, Reus made a definitive breakthrough as a professional, playing 27 games and scoring four goals.
In 2009, Reus signed with Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. He quickly established himself as a prolific player, notably scoring his first Bundesliga goal in August 2009 after a significant solo run. His standout season came in 2011–12, where he scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in the Bundesliga, helping Mönchengladbach secure a UEFA Champions League spot. This performance led to his return to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, in 2012 for a €17.1 million transfer fee. With Dortmund, Reus secured two DFB-Pokal titles (2017, 2021) and two DFL-Supercup titles (2013, 2019). He reached the Champions League final twice with the club, in 2013 and 2024. From 2018 to 2023, he served as club captain and finished as a Bundesliga runner-up seven times.
