Jennifer Love Hewitt was born on February 21, 1979, in Waco, Texas, and raised in Killeen, Texas, by her mother following her parents’ separation. Her early inclination towards performance was evident from a young age, as she sang at a livestock show at age three and captivated audiences with her singing at age four. By five, she was engaged in tap, jazz, and ballet lessons, eventually joining the Texas Show Team, which toured internationally. At age ten, encouraged by talent scouts and after winning the “Texas Our Little Miss Talent Winner” title, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother to pursue an acting and singing career. She quickly secured commercial work and, in 1989, joined Disney’s “Kids Incorporated,” marking her official entry into the entertainment industry.
Hewitt’s career progressed through various television projects before achieving broader recognition. Her breakthrough came in 1995 with the role of Sarah Reeves Merrin on the Fox teen drama “Party of Five,” where her character’s positive reception led to her becoming a series regular. This role established her as a teen idol. In 1997, she transitioned to film with the horror movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” playing Julie James, a role she reprised in the 1998 sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” Further film credits include the teen comedy “Can’t Hardly Wait” (1998) and leading roles in feature films such as “Heartbreakers” (2001) and “The Tuxedo” (2002), as well as the “Garfield” live-action films (2004–2006).
Her television career continued to flourish with significant roles such as Melinda Gordon in the CBS supernatural drama “Ghost Whisperer” (2005–2010), where she also served as a producer and directed three episodes. Later, she starred as Riley Parks in the Lifetime drama series “The Client List” (2012–2013), earning a Golden Globe nomination for the pilot film. From 2014 to 2015, she played Special Agent Kate Callahan in the CBS crime drama “Criminal Minds.” Since 2018, Hewitt has portrayed Maddie Buckley in the Fox procedural “9-1-1,” a role that requires a balance of toughness and empathy. Beyond acting, Hewitt has released four studio albums, with her 2002 album “BareNaked” charting on the Billboard 200. She is also an author, with her 2010 dating-advice book, “The Day I Shot Cupid,” becoming a New York Times bestseller.
