Yuriko Ishida

Yuriko Ishida was born on October 3, 1969, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Her family relocated frequently during her childhood due to her father’s work, leading her to live in Hyogo Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Taiwan before returning to Tokyo at age fifteen. During her elementary school years, she participated in the Junior Olympics as a swimmer, demonstrating an early aptitude for competitive environments. While attending high school, Ishida was scouted for modeling, which marked her initial entry into the entertainment industry. She later pursued higher education, graduating from Kagawa Junior College’s Institute of Nutrition. Her professional acting career began in 1987 with a commercial for ANA for Okinawa, followed by her television debut in the same year. In 1988, she appeared in the TV serial ‘Umi No Gunsei’ (‘Sea’s Constellation’) and the film ‘Kanashi Iro Yanen’ (‘Sad Colours’). Her career has been consistently active since these early roles.

Ishida’s career progression includes significant milestones and recognition for her work in various capacities. In 1999, she and her sister, Hikari Ishida, who is also an actress, established their own agency, marking a step into the business aspect of the industry. Her performances have earned her critical acclaim, including the Japan Academy Awards prize for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film ‘Kita No Zeronen’ in 2005. She further demonstrated her acting prowess by winning the 91st Television Drama Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Nigeru Wa Haji Da Ga Yaku Ni Tatsu’ in 2016. Beyond acting, Ishida is an accomplished writer, having penned eight books, and also works as a narrator.
