The fabulous Mark “The Jester from Leicester” Selby is a professional snooker player, who has been ranked No.1 in the world on several occasions throughout his illustrious career. As of 2023 he is a 4x World Champion, a 3x Masters Champion, and a 2x UK Champion for a total of nine Triple Crown titles. He is also a pool player, and was crowned the World Eight-ball Pool Federation Champion in 2006, making him the only man to have been world champion in both snooker and pool. In 2022 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to snooker and charity.
Born and raised in Leicester, Selby starting playing snooker during his school years. He was 14-years-old when he won the England Under 15 Championship in 1998, and he turned professional after his 16th birthday in June 1999. He reached his first semi-finals at the China Open in 2002, and the following year, aged 19, he reached his first ranking final at the 2003 Scottish Open. In 2007 he was defeated in the final of the World Championship by the great John Higgins, but continued to impress in Masters and Championships tournaments.
Selby won his first major tournament in January 2008: the Masters in London; and a month later claimed his first world ranking title at the Welsh Open. By September 2011 he was ranked No.1 in the world, and since then he has gone on to hold that title a further seven times. He claimed his first World Championships title in 2014, and took his second and third consecutively from 2016 to 2017. He took his fourth World Championships title in 2021 in front of a capacity crowd at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield to become one of only five players to have won the championship four or more times at that venue.
