Taylor has had a dazzling impact on the sport from his professional debut. With his triumphant success on the field, Taylor broke many records at his Ashes debut. He became the third-highest series aggregate in Test history, and throughout the tour rallied up 1669 first-class runs, helping to establish Australia’s victory. His triumphant success on the field led to him becoming one of five players nominated for the Wisden Cricketers of the year. If that wasn’t enough, Taylor was honoured with a personal thank you from Prime Minister John Howard for his performance on the field.
Taylor’s outstanding athletic ability on the field made him an obvious choice for captaincy. He made bold attempts at chasing world records, and led his team to win many matches against heavyweight teams such as England and New Zealand. It’s no wonder that on Australia Day 1999, Taylor was awarded Australian of the Year.
