About

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was born on November 17, 1958, in Lombard, Illinois, to Mary D. (Pagone) and Frank A. Mastrantonio, whose family background is of Italian descent. Her father operated a bronze foundry. Raised in Oak Park, Illinois, she developed an interest in acting during her teenage years through school plays. She later pursued formal drama studies at the University of Illinois, further cultivating her talent by starring in a production of “Guys and Dolls.” Her commitment to her craft led her to fund her education by working summers at Opryland USA theme park, demonstrating early dedication to her career path.

Mastrantonio’s professional acting journey began with a move to New York, where she made her Broadway debut in the 1980 revival of “West Side Story.” This early stage success paved the way for her entry into film. Her breakthrough screen role came in 1983 as Gina Montana, sister to Al Pacino’s character, in Brian De Palma’s “Scarface.” This was followed by a pivotal role as Carmen in the 1986 film “The Color of Money,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The late 1980s and early 1990s marked a period of notable film appearances, including “The Abyss” (1989), “Class Action” (1991), and “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (1991), solidifying her presence in Hollywood. Throughout her career, she has consistently been praised for her measured and impactful portrayals.

Beyond her film work, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio maintained a significant presence in theater, earning a Tony Award nomination for her role as Aldonza/Dulcinea in the 2002 Broadway revival of “Man of La Mancha.” Her television career includes recurring roles in series such as “Limitless” (2015-2016), “The Punisher” (2017-2019), and “Blindspot” (2018-2020), as well as a main role as Captain Zoe Callas in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (2010). She is slated to appear in “Law & Order: Organized Crime” for Season 5 in 2025. Married to director Pat O’Connor since 1990, with whom she has two children, she has balanced her demanding career with family life, residing in London for two decades before returning to the USA in the 2010s. This commitment to diverse roles across different mediums showcases her enduring professionalism and talent within the entertainment industry.
