Matthew Gregory Kuchar was born on June 21, 1978, in Winter Park, Florida. He attended Georgia Tech, where he excelled as a two-time first-team All-American on the golf team. Kuchar won the U.S. Amateur championship in 1997 and was awarded the Haskins Award in 1998 as the nation’s top collegiate golfer. During his amateur career, he showed promise at major championships, earning low amateur honors at both The Masters and U.S. Open in 1998. He turned professional in November 2000, initially missing the qualifying school deadline for that year.
Kuchar’s professional career began with early success, securing his first PGA Tour win at the Honda Classic in 2002. However, he experienced a career slump in 2005, losing his tour card and playing on the Nationwide Tour in 2006, where he won the Henrico County Open to regain his PGA Tour status. He steadily rebuilt his game, and in 2010, he became the PGA Tour’s leading money winner, also earning the Vardon Trophy and Byron Nelson Award for lowest scoring average. A significant turning point came in 2012 when he won The Players Championship, a flagship PGA Tour event, which elevated him to a career-high world ranking of number five. The following year, he won his first World Golf Championship event, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, further cementing his return to the top tier of golf.
Throughout his career, Kuchar has maintained a reputation for consistency, accumulating nine PGA Tour wins, two international wins, and four additional victories. He has represented the United States in several national teams, including five Presidents Cups (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, all winning teams), four Ryder Cups (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, with a win in 2016), and the 2016 Olympic Games, where he earned a bronze medal. He has also achieved notable finishes in major championships, including a second-place finish at the 2017 Open Championship and a third-place tie at the 2012 Masters. As of the 2022-23 season, Kuchar is the highest-earning PGA Tour player without a major championship win, with career earnings exceeding $58 million.
