About

Matthew Robert Smith was born in Northampton, England, on October 28, 1982. Initially aspiring to be a professional footballer, he played for youth teams including Northampton Town and Leicester City, where he captained the youth squad. However, a serious back injury, specifically spondylolysis, ended his football career. His drama teacher then encouraged him to explore acting, leading him to join the National Youth Theatre. He pursued formal education in Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 2005. His early theatrical work included performances with the Royal Court and the National Theatre, in plays such as “Murder in the Cathedral” (2003) and “On the Shore of the Wide World” (2005). He made his television debut in 2006 in “The Ruby in the Smoke” and gained further recognition for his role in the BBC drama series “Party Animals” (2007).

Smith rose to international prominence in 2009 when he was cast as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC’s “Doctor Who.” At 26, he was the youngest actor to take on the role, which he held from 2010 to 2013, starring in 49 episodes, including the 50th-anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor” (2013). This period garnered him significant accolades, including a nomination for a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor, making him the first Doctor to receive such a nomination. Following his departure from “Doctor Who,” Smith transitioned to a film career and continued his work in theatre.

His post-“Doctor Who” career saw him taking on diverse roles, such as Patrick Bateman in the musical adaptation of “American Psycho” (2013-2014) at London’s Almeida Theatre, and a supporting role in the film “Terminator Genisys” (2015). A significant milestone was his portrayal of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in Netflix’s historical drama “The Crown” (2016–2017), for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. More recently, he took on the role of Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s fantasy series “House of the Dragon” (2022–present), earning a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. His film credits also include “Last Night in Soho” (2021), “Morbius” (2022), and the upcoming “Caught Stealing” (2025). He returned to West End theatre in 2024 for a modern retelling of Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People.”
