Matteo Lane

Matthew Lane was born on June 28, 1986, in Des Plaines, Illinois, and raised in Arlington Heights. He later resided on the North Side of Chicago. Lane, who is of Mexican, Italian, and Irish descent, received the nickname “Matteo” from his Italian family. He is openly gay and has an older gay brother. Lane is multilingual, speaking English, Italian, Spanish, and French, having also studied German in high school. At the age of 15, he began formal opera training under vocal coach Nick Falco. His academic pursuits led him to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2009. During his studies, he spent five months in Umbria, Italy, focusing on oil painting and opera.

Lane’s career in performance began with singing opera in bars within Chicago’s Boystown area. In 2011, he transitioned into comedy, starting with open mic nights in Chicago. Around 2012, he relocated to New York to work as a storyboard artist, a position he described as “boring.” He subsequently left this role to fully pursue a career in comedy. By 2014, Lane was recognized for his talent at the Just for Laughs festival, where he was featured in “New Faces.” This exposure led to his appearances on MTV shows such as “Guy Code” and “Girl Code” (2015-2018), as well as “Joking Off” and “Ladylike.”

His television presence expanded to include “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” in 2015, where he served as a panelist. In 2018, Lane represented Italy at “The Ethnic Show” during the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. He also hosted the Snapchat comedy series “Ghost Hunt” and co-created the IFC series “Janice and Jeffrey.” Lane has collaborated on podcasts, co-hosting “Inside the Closet” with Emma Willmann from 2017 to February 2023, and subsequently co-hosting “I Never Liked You” with Nick Smith (2023-present) and “Teach Me Daddy” with Chris Distefano (2024-present). His stand-up specials include “Matteo Lane: The Advice Special” (2022), “Matteo Lane: Hair Plugs & Heartache” (2023), and “Matteo Lane: The Advice Special Part Three” (2024). In 2023, he married Rodrigo Aburto. He is scheduled to release a cookbook, “Your Pasta Sucks, a ‘Cookbook,'” in April 2025 and has a stand-up special, “Matteo Lane: The Al Dente Special,” slated for 2025.
