John Maxwell Homa was born on November 19, 1990, in Burbank, California. He attended Valencia High School, where he was a four-time first-team All-Foothill League selection and the 2009 Foothill League MVP. Homa then played college golf at the University of California, Berkeley, on scholarship, earning a degree in Consumer Behavior. During his amateur career, he won both the individual Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship and the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship in 2013. He also qualified for the 2013 U.S. Open as an amateur and was selected to the 2013 Walker Cup squad. Homa turned professional upon completing the Walker Cup in 2013.
Homa’s professional career began with early success on the Web.com Tour, where he finished tied for ninth at the Frys.com Open, his first PGA Tour event as a professional in October 2013. In May 2014, he secured his first professional win at the Web.com Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am, leading to his PGA Tour card for the 2014–15 season. After losing and regaining his tour card multiple times, Homa achieved his breakthrough PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2019. He continued to build on this success, securing his second PGA Tour win at the Genesis Invitational in February 2021, defeating Tony Finau in a playoff. Further victories followed with the Fortinet Championship in September 2021 and May 2022, and his second Wells Fargo Championship title in May 2022. By January 2023, he claimed another significant win at the Farmers Insurance Open and reached his highest world ranking of fifth in April 2023. Homa also secured his first international win at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa in November 2023.
Throughout his career, Homa has also represented the United States in national team competitions, including the Presidents Cup in 2022 and 2024, both resulting in wins for the U.S. team. He also participated in the Ryder Cup in 2023, where he was the leading U.S. point-getter. Homa has accumulated 6 PGA Tour wins and 2 Korn Ferry Tour wins, demonstrating consistent performance and a significant presence in professional golf. His career earnings exceed $28 million, reflecting his consistent top performances.
