Merryn Somerset Webb

Merryn Somerset Webb was born on June 23, 1970. She attended Wycombe Abbey, a boarding school in the UK. She earned a first-class degree in History & Economics from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where she was a senior scholar. Following this, she received a Daiwa scholarship, which allowed her to study for a master’s degree in Japanese language at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. In 1992, she moved to Japan to continue her Japanese studies and produced business programs for NHK, Japan’s public television station. Her early career in the financial sector began in 1993 as an institutional broker for SBC Warburg in Tokyo, a role she held for five years.

Returning to London in 1998, Merryn Somerset Webb worked for BNP Paribas before transitioning into financial journalism as a writer for The Week. In 2000, she became the launch editor for the financial weekly MoneyWeek. She served as Editor-in-Chief of MoneyWeek until recently, also holding a position as Contributing Editor to the Financial Times, where she maintained a weekly column. She continues to contribute a monthly column to MoneyWeek. In 2011, she co-presented Superscrimpers for Channel 4, a television show focused on saving money.

In 2022, Merryn Somerset Webb became a Senior Columnist at Bloomberg, focusing on wealth, investing, and personal finance, a role she uses to provide insights into market dynamics. Her career also includes authorship, with her first book, “Love is Not Enough,” published in 2007. Her second book, “Share Power,” was released in 2022, advocating for ordinary people to influence capitalism through share ownership. She holds non-executive director positions at the Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon Trust and the Montanaro European Smaller Companies Trust.
