About

Errol Barnett, born on April 3, 1983, in Milton Keynes, England, began his journalism career at the age of 18 when he was hired by Channel One News in Los Angeles. At the time, he was the youngest anchor and reporter for the youth-oriented network. During this period, he covered significant events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then-Senator Barack Obama’s initial national speech, an interview with Congressman John Lewis, and reporting on the New England heroin epidemic. He also covered Barack Obama’s breakout DNC keynote speech and reported from the United Nations during Colin Powell’s presentation of WMD intelligence. After his time at Channel One, Barnett attended UCLA, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a focus on international relations. Following his graduation, he joined CNN in 2008.

At CNN, Barnett initially reported on the growing influence of social media and was part of the most viewed streaming event in history during President Obama’s Inauguration on CNN.com in 2008. In 2010, he anchored from CNN Abu Dhabi, focusing on the Arab Spring, contributing to the network’s Peabody Award-winning coverage. As a CNN foreign correspondent, he was based in Johannesburg, South Africa, covering the death of Nelson Mandela, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial, and various miner strikes. From 2011 to 2014, he hosted “Inside Africa,” an award-winning documentary program, reporting from 22 countries, including Senegal, Morocco, Ethiopia, and Madagascar. Later, while based in Atlanta, Georgia, he anchored “CNN Newsroom,” covering events like the Ferguson, Missouri protests and the death of Robin Williams.

In 2016, Barnett joined CBS News as a Washington, D.C.–based correspondent and anchor during the U.S. presidential election. He appeared on “CBS This Morning,” the “CBS Evening News,” and “Face the Nation.” He covered the Presidencies of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, artificial intelligence, and extreme weather events. In 2018, he had a notable interaction with the U.S. Secret Service while attempting to question Jared Kushner regarding his relationship with Mohammad Bin Salman. During the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, he interviewed then-candidate Joe Biden, asking about cognitive abilities. In 2024, Barnett was named the anchor of the “CBS Morning News,” streaming weekdays at 7:00 AM, ET on CBS News 24/7, and continues as a national correspondent based in New York City. He has also been a fill-in co-host on “CBS Mornings,” “CBS Saturday Morning,” and the “CBS Weekend News.” He has moderated discussions and spoken at conferences for organizations such as the United Nations, Milken Institute, and the Smithsonian, focusing on topics like freedom of the press and U.S. politics.
