About

Mary Louise Streep was born on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William Streep, Jr., a pharmaceutical executive. Her early ambitions included opera, before she developed an interest in acting while attending Vassar College. After graduating from Vassar, she enrolled in the Yale School of Drama, where she honed her craft through numerous stage productions. She made her feature film debut in 1977 with a small role in “Julia”, followed by her first Academy Award nomination for “The Deer Hunter” in 1978. Streep’s career gained significant momentum with her Academy Award-winning performances in “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979) and “Sophie’s Choice” (1982), establishing her as a leading talent in American cinema. In 1978, she also earned a Primetime Emmy Award for her role in the television miniseries “Holocaust.”

Throughout the 1980s, Streep continued to build a distinguished filmography, starring in films such as “Silkwood” (1983), “Out of Africa” (1985), and “A Cry in the Dark” (1988), for which she developed a notable Australian accent. Her ability to master diverse accents and embody complex characters quickly became a hallmark of her work. The 1990s saw her explore more varied roles, including comedic parts in “She-Devil” (1989) and “Death Becomes Her” (1992), and a critically acclaimed performance in “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995). By the 2000s, Streep experienced a significant career resurgence with commercial successes, demonstrating her enduring appeal and box office power. Her performances in “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) and “Mamma Mia!” (2008) further solidified her status as a global star, while roles in “Doubt” (2008) and “Julie & Julia” (2009) brought additional critical recognition, including another Academy Award for “The Iron Lady” (2011).

In recent years, Streep has continued to engage in high-profile projects across film and television. In 2017, she earned her 21st Academy Award nomination for “The Post.” She has also made significant contributions to television, receiving Emmy Awards for “Angels in America” (2003) and starring in critically acclaimed series such as “Big Little Lies” (2019) and “Only Murders in the Building” (2023–24). Beyond her acting career, Streep is an active advocate for women’s rights and education, having funded scholarships and supported initiatives like The Writers Lab for female screenwriters. Her dedication to her craft and her consistent ability to deliver compelling performances have cemented her legacy as one of the most respected and admired actresses of her generation.
