About

Michael Barbaro was born on October 12, 1979, in New Haven, Connecticut. He was exposed to journalism at an early age, delivering the New Haven Register every weekday morning with his sister during middle school. He continued to pursue his interest in writing throughout his high school years at Hamden Hall Country Day School, where he contributed to the official newspaper, The Advent, and co-founded an underground newspaper, La Verité. He graduated from Yale University in 2002 with a degree in history, during which time he served as editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News, managing a team of nearly 100 student writers.

After his college graduation, Barbaro began his professional journalism career at The Washington Post, where he covered the biotechnology industry. In 2005, he joined The New York Times. His initial work at the Times included extensive coverage of Walmart until 2007, followed by reporting on New York City Hall and the American retail sector. He later became a national political correspondent for the Times, playing a prominent role in covering the 2016 United States presidential election. His reporting during this period frequently appeared on the front page of the newspaper.

A significant turning point in Barbaro’s career occurred in 2016 when he hosted “The Run-Up,” a twice-a-week political podcast for The New York Times, leading up to the presidential election. Building on this experience, in February 2017, he began hosting “The Daily,” the Times’ first podcast to release episodes five days a week. “The Daily” quickly gained a substantial following, reaching an audience of one million listeners daily within its first year. The podcast achieved widespread success, consistently ranking as the No. 1 podcast in the United States throughout 2019 and becoming the most popular U.S. news podcast on both Spotify and Apple in 2020. By August 2020, “The Daily” had more than 3.5 million daily subscribers, a larger audience than the Times’ print editions. His work on “The Daily” earned him a duPont-Columbia University Award in 2018.
