About

Michael Eric Dyson was born on October 23, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan. He was adopted by Everett Dyson in 1960. Dyson attended Cranbrook School on an academic scholarship before completing his education at Northwestern High School. At nineteen, he became an ordained Baptist minister. He supported his family by working in factories in Detroit before enrolling at Knoxville College and later earning a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from Carson–Newman College in 1985. In 1993, he completed a Ph.D. in religion from Princeton University, where his doctoral dissertation focused on Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. This academic foundation, combined with his early experiences, shaped his career as a prominent public intellectual.

Dyson has held professorships at several universities, including Chicago Theological Seminary, Brown University, Columbia University, and Georgetown University. In 2021, he joined Vanderbilt University as a Centennial Chair and University Distinguished Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies and Ethics and Society. His extensive bibliography includes over twenty books, many of which are New York Times bestsellers. His writing explores complex social issues and offers biographical insights into figures like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Barack Obama. Dyson’s consistent engagement with critical topics has garnered him numerous literary awards, including the Langston Hughes Medal in 2020, solidifying his position as a significant voice in American intellectual discourse.

Beyond his academic and literary work, Dyson has maintained a visible presence as a media commentator and radio host. From 2006 to 2007, he hosted a radio show on Radio One, and later, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, starting in 2009. He is a commentator for National Public Radio and MSNBC, and a regular guest on CNN and Real Time with Bill Maher. His contributions extend to print media as a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and a contributing editor for The New Republic and ESPN’s The Undefeated. Throughout his career, Dyson has used these platforms to analyze and contextualize issues of race, poverty, and social justice in America.
