Japan Miho Yoshioka, a distinguished Japanese sailor, transitioned from indoor sports to Olympic excellence, showcasing her talent in multiple global sailing competitions.

Born on August 27, 1990, in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, Japan, Miho Yoshioka initially focused on indoor sports like volleyball and badminton due to her height. Her grandmother, who lived near the ocean, introduced her to water sports, leading her to discover sailing at Ashiya High School at the age of 15. This pivot marked the beginning of her professional sailing career, driven by a desire to be surrounded by nature. Initially, her family was opposed to her pursuing sailing as a career as it was not a major sport in Japan, but her commitment and ambition motivated her to achieve significant results and gain their support.
During her fourth year at Ritsumeikan University, a critical turning point occurred when fellow sailor Ai Yoshida recognized Yoshioka’s potential, especially her height of 177 cm. Despite a significant age and experience gap, their partnership in the women’s 470 class quickly became successful. This collaboration led to her Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where they finished fifth in the Two Person Dinghy (470) event. Their success continued with a historic gold medal at the 2018 Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, marking the first time a Japanese duo achieved this feat. This was followed by a silver medal at the 2019 470 Worlds in Enoshima. Yoshioka also secured gold medals at the Asian Games in 2018 (Jakarta-Palembang) and 2022 (Hangzhou).
Leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 470 class transitioned to a mixed-gender format. Yoshioka formed a new partnership with Keiju Okada, achieving immediate success. They secured a bronze medal at the Allianz Regatta in 2022 and had a breakthrough year in 2023, winning the Trofeo Princesa Sofia and claiming the world title at the Allianz Sailing World Championships in The Hague. Their partnership culminated in a silver medal in the Mixed Dinghy event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Yoshioka’s career demonstrates a consistent progression, from an initial exploration of the sport to becoming an Olympic medalist and world champion.
