Michael Joseph Alstott, known as “A-Train,” was born on December 21, 1973, in Joliet, Illinois. He attended Joliet Catholic Academy for high school and later played college football at Purdue University. During his collegiate career, Alstott distinguished himself by becoming the first player in Purdue history to be named MVP for three consecutive seasons. He set the Purdue rushing touchdown record with 39, a record that stood until 2008. Alstott concluded his college career as Purdue’s all-time leading rusher with 3,635 yards, including 1,436 yards in 1995. He graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in business.
Alstott was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round (35th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. He played fullback for the Buccaneers for 12 seasons, from 1996 to 2007. Throughout his career, he was a key component of the Buccaneers’ offense. He earned six Pro Bowl selections and was named First-Team All-Pro three times (1997, 1998, 1999). A significant highlight of his professional career was being a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that won Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003, where he scored the franchise’s first Super Bowl touchdown. He retired from professional football due to neck problems on January 24, 2008.
After his retirement, Alstott remained connected to the Tampa Bay community. He holds the distinction of having been the Buccaneers’ all-time leading touchdown scorer with 71 touchdowns until 2021. In recognition of his contributions to the team, he was inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor in 2015. His career statistics include 1,359 rushing attempts for 5,088 yards and 58 touchdowns, along with 305 receptions for 2,284 yards and 13 touchdowns.
