Michael Dwayne Vick was born on June 26, 1980, in Newport News, Virginia. Growing up in a public housing project, he learned football skills from his father and cousin Aaron Brooks. Sports provided a pathway out of a challenging environment for Vick. He attended Warwick High School, where he was a three-year starter, passing for 4,846 yards with 43 touchdowns and rushing for 1,048 yards with 18 scores. After high school, Vick chose Virginia Tech, where he quickly made a significant impact. In his freshman season in 1999, he led the Hokies to an undefeated regular season and a national title game appearance in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. He won the Archie Griffin Award as college football’s most valuable player, the Big East Offensive Player of the Year, and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting. His college success culminated in his induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2025.
Vick was selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, becoming the first African-American quarterback to be taken with the top pick. During his six years with the Falcons (2001-2006), he earned three Pro Bowl selections and led the team to two playoff runs. A career highlight was in 2006 when he became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. His NFL career faced a major interruption in 2007 when he pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a dog fighting ring, resulting in a 21-month prison sentence and an indefinite suspension from the NFL.
After serving his sentence, Vick signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. His return to the NFL saw a resurgence in his career, particularly in the 2010 season, where he led the Eagles to a division title. He was recognized as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year by the Associated Press and Sporting News and earned his fourth Pro Bowl selection. He later played for the New York Jets (2014) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2015), primarily as a backup, before officially retiring in 2017 as an Atlanta Falcon. Post-retirement, Vick embarked on a coaching career, serving as an advisor for the Atlanta Legends in 2019 and becoming the head football coach at Norfolk State University in 2024. He also became an NFL analyst for Fox NFL Kickoff on FS1.
