Cliff Ming-Si Chen, known professionally as Ming Chen, was born on August 1, 1974, in Euclid, Ohio, to Chinese immigrant parents. His family relocated frequently during his childhood, spending significant periods in Jackson and Ann Arbor, Michigan, due to his father’s career as an engineer. Chen pursued his higher education at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1996 with a degree in communications. During his early career, he gained experience working at a video store. In 1996, Chen established a fan website dedicated to Kevin Smith’s film ‘Clerks,’ which served as a pivotal point in his career.
His dedication to the fan site led Kevin Smith to enlist Chen in building the official View Askew Productions website. After working for LivePlanet and in the Washington, D.C. area for two years, Chen officially joined Kevin Smith’s company in 2002. He became the full-time webmaster for View Askew upon relocating to New Jersey, a role that occasionally involved unusual assignments, such as an eight-hour drive to deliver a copy of ‘Red State’ to a critic in Maine in 2011. Chen expanded his involvement in media through SModcast Internet Radio, participating in podcasts such as ‘Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!’ and ‘Puck Nuts,’ and co-hosting ‘I Sell Comics!’ with Mike Zapcic.
From 2012 to 2018, Chen achieved wider recognition as a cast member on the AMC reality series ‘Comic Book Men,’ where he worked alongside Walt Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, and Bryan Johnson at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. The show followed their daily operations until its cancellation after seven seasons in 2018. Following this, Chen ventured into new entrepreneurial endeavors, co-founding Coral Sword: Coffee, Comics & Games in Houston, Texas, with Hunter Pence and others in 2018. The same year, he partnered with Mike Zapcic to establish A Shared Universe PodcaStudio, which later expanded with a second location in 2020. Chen also actively supports non-profit organizations, including Street Poets Inc. and The Kenny Gordon Foundation, and became a board member for The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County in 2021.
