Mervyl Samuel Melendez Jr. was born on November 29, 1998, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He attended St. James School in Montgomery, Alabama, for three years before transferring to Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay, Florida, for his senior year. In 2016, Melendez was a member of the United States national team. He committed to play college baseball at Florida International University, but was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round, 52nd overall, of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with Kansas City for $2.1 million, marking the beginning of his professional baseball career.
After signing, Melendez made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Arizona League Royals. He progressed through the minor league system, playing for the Lexington Legends in 2018 where he earned All-Star honors and the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2019, where he was also named an All-Star. The 2020 minor league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Melendez remained active at the Royals’ Alternate Training Site. His breakout year came in 2021, playing for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Omaha Storm Chasers, where he hit 41 home runs, leading the minor leagues and earning him the Joe Bauman Home Run Award, becoming the first catcher to receive this honor.
Melendez made his Major League Baseball debut with the Kansas City Royals on May 3, 2022. During his rookie season, he played extensively at catcher, left field, right field, and designated hitter, hitting 18 home runs and drawing 66 walks, a notable achievement for a first-year player with at least 50% of his games at catcher. In 2023, he continued his versatile role, ranking second on the Royals in games played and showcasing improved offensive performance after the All-Star break. He also represented Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In 2024, despite an injured list stint for a left ankle sprain, he maintained a high extra-base hit rate and recorded his first career grand slam. He started five of Kansas City’s six postseason games in 2024, including a go-ahead, two-run home run in the ALDS against Gerrit Cole.
