Talented Natalie Taylor is a folk singer-songwriter from Alabama who shot to fame when, much to her surprise, her song ‘Surrender’ became a viral hit on TikTok. Originally released in 2015, the song suddenly began getting a heap of listens on Spotify long after its release. Curious as to why, Taylor found that it had been slowly going viral on TikTok, a platform she knew almost nothing about. Eventually, the song’s popularity landed her a deal with Sony Music who gave ‘Surrender’ a major release in 2019. It entered the American, British, and Australian charts and now has well over a quarter of a billion streams on Spotify alone.
Taylor began writing songs in her late teens and quickly developed an emotional, genre-defying style that saw her music being used in commercials and on many American television series. She released a self-titled EP in 2010 and her first single, ‘Love Life’, in 2014 but she has also become known for her cover versions, such as her take on Steppenwolf’s classic rock anthem, ‘Born to Be Wild’, which was used in a Volvo advertising campaign during 2020. In 2021, she released an EP of some of her best-known covers. It was an eclectic mix that included the likes of Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight’, The Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You’, and the Goo Goo Dolls’ ‘Iris’.
With her soundtrack success established and a gold-certified worldwide viral hit to her name, it’s likely that Taylor’s beautiful, evocative original music and reworkings of classic hits will be soundtracking our lives for many years to come.
