Natasha Rothwell was born on October 18, 1980, in Wichita, Kansas. Her parents, David and Sharon Rothwell, are from Philadelphia. Due to her father’s career in the United States Air Force, her family frequently relocated during her childhood, living in various states and Turkey. Rothwell attended Ithaca College, initially majoring in journalism, before transferring to the University of Maryland, College Park, where she pursued a theater major on a creative and performing arts scholarship. This early exposure to different environments and her academic path laid the groundwork for her diverse career.
Rothwell began her professional journey by teaching English in Japan, where she also performed at the Tokyo Comedy Store. In 2009, she moved to New York City and worked as a high school theatre teacher for four years, while simultaneously performing with the Upright Citizens Brigade. Her talent in comedy led to her being hired as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” for its 2014-2015 season. In 2015, she relocated to Los Angeles, a move that marked a significant turning point in her career, leading to her breakthrough role.
Her breakthrough came in 2016 with the HBO series “Insecure,” where she starred as Kelli Prenny and also contributed as a writer and supervising producer. This role garnered her critical acclaim, including an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022. Following “Insecure,” Rothwell joined “The White Lotus” in 2021 as Belinda Lindsey, earning two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her performance. In 2024, she co-created, produced, and starred in the Hulu comedy series “How to Die Alone,” further solidifying her position as a multi-hyphenate talent in the entertainment industry.
