Nelly Korda was born on July 28, 1998, in Bradenton, Florida, into a family of athletes. Her father, Petr Korda, was a professional tennis player who won the 1998 Australian Open, and her older sister Jessica is also a professional golfer on the LPGA Tour. Nelly began her golf career at a young age, training at the IMG Academy and making the cut at the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at just 14 years old. She continued to excel in her amateur career, securing victories at events such as the Kathy Whitworth Invitational and the Yani Tseng Invitational in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In 2015, she represented the United States in the Junior Solheim Cup, where her team made history by winning the tournament away from home.
Korda transitioned to professional golf in 2016, joining the Symetra Tour where she quickly achieved her first professional win at the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge. Her performance earned her an LPGA Tour card for the 2017 season. Her LPGA debut saw a T5th finish, and by 2018, she secured her maiden LPGA Tour title at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship, making her and her sister Jessica the third pair of sisters to win LPGA titles. The following year, she accomplished a “Family Slam” in Australia by winning the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, mirroring her father’s and brother’s wins in Australian tennis tournaments. This victory propelled her into the top-10 of the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Her career further escalated in 2021, a pivotal year that saw her win four LPGA events, including her first major at the Women’s PGA Championship, which also elevated her to the world number one ranking. That same year, she made history as the first American female golfer since 1900 to win an individual gold medal at an Olympic Games during the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics.
