Nick Thune

Nicholas Ivan Thune was born in Seattle, Washington, on December 8, 1979, and grew up in Redmond. He later moved to Los Angeles at the age of 24 to pursue a career in comedy. Early in his career, Thune integrated a guitar into his stand-up performances, utilizing it more as a prop for wordplay rather than for musical comedy. His performances gained steady popularity, leading to appearances at venues such as the Laugh Factory and on late-night television programs like The Tonight Show, where he has performed eight times. In 2007, he was featured in a Comedy Central Presents special, marking an early milestone in his television career.

Thune’s career further progressed with the release of his debut album, “Thick Noon”, on February 23, 2010, through Comedy Central Records. He transitioned into creating hour-long stand-up specials, with “Nick Thune: Folk Hero” premiering on Netflix in February 2014. This special was subsequently released on both CD and vinyl. His second hour-long special, “Good Guy”, debuted on NBC’s Seeso platform on December 22, 2016. Filmed in October 2016 in Portland, Oregon, “Good Guy” represented a shift in Thune’s performance style as he opted to no longer use his guitar throughout the show. This change in approach was influenced by a period where he performed without his guitar due to a broken arm, discovering he enjoyed the stage presence without it.

Beyond stand-up, Thune has established himself in acting and writing. He had cameo appearances in films such as “Knocked Up” (2007) and “Unaccompanied Minors” (2006). In television, he was cast in the 2010 NBC pilot “Beach Lane” alongside Matthew Broderick. Although the pilot was not picked up, he made guest appearances on shows like “Traffic Light” and “Happy Endings” in 2011, and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” in 2012. More recently, Thune starred in the 2017 film “Dave Made a Maze,” playing the titular character, and also appeared in “People You May Know.” In 2020, he had a guest-starring role as Magnus in HBO’s “Love Life” during its first season. He also took on the role of Godfrey in “The Right One” (2021) and Anti in “Mixtape” (2021). As a writer, he contributed to projects like “Holy Sh*T” (a TV movie still in progress) and his stand-up specials.
