Nikola Jokić was born on February 19, 1995, in Sombor, Serbia. He developed an early passion for basketball, playing with his two older brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja. His brothers, a decade his senior, also played basketball, with Nemanja later competing in college basketball in the U.S. Growing up, Jokić also had a keen interest in harness racing, even competing as an amateur. His formative years in Sombor laid the groundwork for his eventual professional career in basketball.
Jokić began his professional basketball journey with Mega Basket in Serbia. He signed with Mega Vizura in December 2012, primarily playing for their junior team before advancing to the senior squad. In the 2013-14 season, he averaged 11.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over 25 Adriatic League games. His performance continued to improve, culminating in the 2014-15 season where he averaged 15.4 points, a league-leading 9.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in the Adriatic League. During this breakout season, he was named the Adriatic League regular season MVP and the ABA League Top Prospect in 2015. On June 26, 2014, while still playing for Mega Basket, he was selected by the Denver Nuggets as the 41st overall pick in the second round of the NBA draft, notably during a Taco Bell commercial.
