Nile Michael Wilson, born on January 17, 1996, in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, began his gymnastics career at a young age. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the British Junior Champion in March 2014 and earning the Young Sportsman male award at the Leeds Sports Awards. In May 2014, he achieved a significant milestone by winning five gold medals at the European Junior Gymnastics Championships in Sofia, becoming the first British gymnast to do so. This success led to his selection for the England Commonwealth Games team, marking his transition to senior-level competition.
Wilson’s senior career saw him achieve considerable success. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he secured a team gold for England, an individual all-around bronze, a silver in parallel bars, and his first individual Commonwealth gold on the horizontal bar. He continued to collect medals, including a silver with the British team at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, a historic achievement for British men’s gymnastics. The pinnacle of his competitive career came at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he earned an Olympic bronze medal on the horizontal bar, becoming the first British gymnast to do so. In 2018, at the Commonwealth Games, he won three gold medals (team, all-around, horizontal bar) and two silver medals (rings, parallel bars).
Despite a promising career, Wilson announced his retirement from competitive gymnastics on January 14, 2021, citing injuries and mental health concerns. Post-retirement, he has become a vocal advocate for mental health in sports and successfully participated in the fifteenth series of Dancing on Ice, winning the competition in March 2023. He also runs a popular YouTube channel, ‘Nile Wilson’ and ‘Neil and Nile Vlogs’, focusing on workouts, daily life, and gymnastics. Wilson has also established ‘Nile Wilson Gymnastics’, a venture aimed at increasing participation in gymnastics across the UK through clubs in locations like Burnley, The Wirral, London, Leeds, Rotherham, Coventry, Mansfield, and Wolverhampton.
