Park Tae-joon

Park Tae-joon was born on June 6, 2004, in Ulsan, South Korea. He began his taekwondo career in the cadet category, winning a gold medal at the Russian Open Tournament in Moscow in the -37 kg flyweight event in 2016. He continued to demonstrate his abilities, securing another gold medal at the Asian Junior Championships in Amman in 2019, competing in the -45 kg finweight category. These early successes established foundational experience for his transition to senior-level competitions.

In 2022, Park Tae-joon made a significant impact in the senior category, earning his first gold medal at the Asian Taekwondo Championships in Chuncheon in the -54 kg finweight event. That same year, he won another gold medal at the Korea Taekwondo Open in Chuncheon and achieved victory at the 2022 World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester in the -58 kg flyweight event. His progress continued into 2023, where he secured gold medals at the Canada Taekwondo Open in Vancouver and the US Taekwondo Open in Las Vegas, both in the -58 kg flyweight division. A pivotal achievement in 2023 was his gold medal at the World Taekwondo Championships in Baku in the -54 kg finweight event, marking his debut in the senior World Championships.

His career progression culminated in 2024 when he qualified for the Paris Olympics by defeating Jang Jun, a former Olympic medalist, in the national team selection. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Park Tae-joon won a gold medal in the men’s 58 kg category, defeating Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia and Gashim Magomedov of Azerbaijan. This victory was particularly notable as it marked South Korea’s first taekwondo gold medal since 2016, contributing to an upswing for the country in the sport. He was also recognized with the men’s Most Valuable Player award at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships for his performance.
