Patrick Aloysius Ewing is a Jamaican-American former professional basketball player and well-known NBA coach. He was named the 16th greatest college basketball player of all time by ESPN in 2008. He spent the majority of his playing career as the Starting Center for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association. During this time he was an eleven-time All-Star and was named to seven All-NBA teams. He had brief stints with other teams, the Seattle SuperSonics, and Orlando Magic. In 2009, he was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame as a member of the “Dream Team.” The Knicks retired his number 33 in 2003.
As a member of the United States men’s Olympic basketball teams in 1984 and 1992, he won gold medals in both games. Ewing was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in a 1996 vote commemorating the league’s 50th anniversary. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, twice: once in 2008 for his individual career and again in 2010 for his participation in the 1992 Olympic team.
In 2017, Ewing was hired as head coach of his former college team, the Georgetown Hoyas, the men’s basketball team at Georgetown University. He has appeared as himself in many pop-culture moments like his appearance in the 1996 cult classic animated movie “Space Jam” alongside other members of The Dream Team, Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues. He also appeared in shows like “Spin City” and “Mad About You” as well as TV commercials for Snickers and endorsements with Adidas.
