Daniel Lewis “Dan” Majerle, known as “Thunder Dan,” was born on September 9, 1965, in Traverse City, Michigan. His basketball journey began at Traverse City High School and continued at Central Michigan University, where he excelled for four years. During his collegiate career, Majerle averaged 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, leading the Chippewas to the NCAA Tournament in 1987. His performance stood out, setting a school record for points in a season. Majerle’s great-grandfather had immigrated to the United States from Slovenia in 1901, establishing roots in Michigan.
Majerle was drafted by the Phoenix Suns as the 14th pick in the 1988 NBA draft. Initially booed by fans on draft night, Suns coach Cotton Fitzsimmons famously defended Majerle, stating, “you’ll be sorry you ever booed this young man.” Majerle quickly became a fan favorite, recognized for his powerful dunks which earned him the nickname “Thunder Dan.” His career in Phoenix saw him evolve into an effective three-point shooter and defensive specialist. He earned three NBA All-Star selections in 1992, 1993, and 1995, and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team twice, in 1991 and 1993. A significant milestone was reached in 1993 when he played a crucial role alongside Charles Barkley in leading the Suns to the NBA Finals. Later, Majerle won a gold medal with the U.S. national team at the 1994 FIBA World Championship, adding to his bronze medal from the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
After his tenure with the Suns, Majerle played for the Cleveland Cavaliers for one season (1995–1996) and then spent five seasons with the Miami Heat (1996–2001). He returned to the Phoenix Suns for his final NBA season in 2001-2002 before officially retiring as a member of his original team. Following his playing career, Majerle transitioned into coaching, serving as the associate head coach for the Phoenix Suns from 2008 to 2013, and later as the head coach for Grand Canyon University from 2013 to 2020. He was inducted into the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor in 2003, and both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
