Perdita Felicien is considered by many to be the best hurdler in Canadian athletics history, having won medals at a wide variety of major competitions. Her best time for the 100 metres hurdles of 12.46 seconds, recorded in 2004, remains the Canadian record.
Felicien has been the world champion in the 100 m hurdles, while she also won gold in the 60 metres hurdles at the 2004 world indoor Championships. She has picked up a raft of silver medals to accompany these goals as well, at the 2007 World Championships, the 2010 World Indoor Championships, and twice at the Pan American Games.
Felicien was born in Oshawa, Ontario, and demonstrated her exceptional athletic ability from an early age. At school, she competed in the 100 metre dash, being particularly inspired by Donovan Bailey, and was also a considerably talented 200 metre runner and long jumper.
However, Felicien won the Ontario high-school hurdling championship in 1998, and began to limit herself to hurdling shortly afterwards. She was offered various athletic scholarships from American universities, and ultimately chose to study at the University of Illinois.
Shortly after graduating, Felicien was already ranked number one in the world in the 100 metres hurdles by the NCAA. Her performances earned her the first of three consecutive University of Illinois Female Athlete of the Year awards and she was voted the U.S. Track Coaches Association National Female Outdoor Athlete of the Year.
Felicien enjoyed a sparkling career in athletics, and will never be forgotten in Canada in particular.
