About

Peter Asher, born on June 22, 1944, in Willesden, Middlesex, England, began his career as a child actor appearing in films like ‘The Planter’s Wife’ (1952) and ‘Escapade’ (1955), and the ITV series ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’. His early exposure to the entertainment industry laid a foundational understanding of performance and production. While attending Westminster School, he met Gordon Waller, forming the pop music vocal duo Peter and Gordon in 1962. Their debut single, the Lennon/McCartney-penned “A World Without Love” (1964), became a global hit, launching their successful music career which included nine Top 20 records.

After Peter and Gordon disbanded in 1968, Asher pivoted his career, taking on the role of head of A&R for The Beatles’ Apple Records. In this capacity, he signed a then-unknown James Taylor and produced his debut solo album. Convinced of Taylor’s potential, Asher resigned from Apple Records to move to the United States and manage Taylor, initiating a long and successful partnership. This move marked a significant turning point, establishing Asher as a prominent figure in artist management and record production. He later expanded his management and production work to include Linda Ronstadt, contributing significantly to the “Californian rock sound” of the 1970s through his work with artists like Ronstadt, JD Souther, Andrew Gold, and Bonnie Raitt.

Throughout the 1980s and beyond, Asher continued to produce hit albums for diverse artists such as Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, and Ringo Starr. In 1995, he became Senior Vice-President of Sony Music Entertainment, a role he held until 2002 before returning to artist management full-time. In 2015, Asher was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to the British music industry, acknowledging a career that has spanned over six decades and profoundly influenced popular music.
