Puka Nacua, born on May 29, 2001, in Provo, Utah, established himself as a prominent football talent early in his career. While attending Orem High School in Orem, Utah, Nacua achieved Utah state records for career receptions with 260, receiving yards totaling 5,226, and 58 receiving touchdowns. His exceptional performance earned him the Polynesian High School Football Player of the Year award in 2018. Following high school, Nacua began his collegiate career at the University of Washington, playing in eight games as a freshman and three during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, where he accumulated 16 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns before transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU).
At BYU from 2021-2022, Nacua continued to demonstrate his skill and versatility. He appeared in 21 games, starting 14, and recorded 91 receptions for 1,430 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also showcased his rushing ability with 39 carries for 357 yards and five rushing touchdowns. His collegiate achievements include leading the Cougars in receiving yards for both years he played, even while managing injuries in 2022. Nacua was recognized with multiple honors, including Phil Steele All-Independent First-Team in both 2021 and 2022, and the College Football Network All-Independent Wide Receiver of the Year in 2022. These formative years laid the groundwork for his entry into professional football and his immediate impact in the league.
Nacua was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft as the 177th overall pick. He quickly exceeded expectations, making his NFL debut on September 10, 2023, where he recorded 10 catches for 119 yards. In his second game, he broke the NFL single-game record for catches by a rookie with 15 receptions for 147 yards. By the end of his rookie season, Nacua set new NFL rookie single-season records for total receptions with 105 and total receiving yards with 1,486, breaking marks that had stood for decades. His impressive rookie campaign earned him Second-team All-Pro honors, a Pro Bowl selection, and a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. His professional career milestones include tying Odell Beckham Jr. for the fewest games (30) to reach 200 career receptions and being the fastest player in NFL history to reach 1,500 receiving yards in Week 1 of the 2024 season.
