Rachel Erin Luba, born on July 27, 1992, in Monterey, California, has established a notable career in the male-dominated field of sports agency. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she was a gymnast, graduating magna cum laude in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Following her collegiate gymnastics career, Luba participated in competitive boxing. She then pursued legal education at Pepperdine University School of Law, completing her Juris Doctor degree a semester early in 2016.
Luba’s career in sports agency began with an internship at Beverly Hills Sports Council during law school. In 2017, she joined the Major League Baseball Players Association as counsel, where she worked on arbitration cases, contributing to a record 12 favorable hearings for MLB players in 2018. In October 2019, Luba founded her own sports agency, Luba Sports. As the sole employee in its initial phase, she dedicated extensive hours to build the company. Her agency gained significant attention when pitcher Trevor Bauer became her first client. In 2020, Luba negotiated a one-year, $17.5 million contract for Bauer with the Cincinnati Reds, which was one of the highest contracts for an arbitration-eligible pitcher in MLB history at that time.
Following Bauer’s Cy Young award win in 2020, Rachel Luba negotiated a record-breaking deal for him with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2020–2021 offseason. This contract made Bauer the highest-paid player in Major League Baseball history for specific years, earning $40 million in 2021 and $45 million in 2022, with a total potential value of $102 million over three years through player opt-outs. This deal marked the first time an MLB contract eclipsed $40 million in a single season. Luba also represented All-Star right fielder Yasiel Puig from November 2020 to November 2021. Beyond her agency work, Luba co-hosts the podcast ‘Cork’d Up’ with Jessica Kleinschmidt and maintains a YouTube channel where she discusses aspects of sports arbitration and the role of an agent. She was recognized in Forbes 30 Under 30 – Sports (2021).
