Rashid Khan Arman was born on September 20, 1998, in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. Growing up in a Shinwari Pashtun family, his early life was shaped by the Afghan war, leading his family to reside in Pakistan for a period. He developed his cricket skills playing with his brothers and initially focused on batting before excelling in leg-spin bowling, inspired by Shahid Afridi. Rashid attended Islamia College Peshawar, studying computer science until 2013, where his athletic abilities earned him admission. His talent became evident in 2014 during the Afghan cricket team’s tour of Pakistan.
Khan made his One Day International (ODI) debut for Afghanistan against Zimbabwe on October 18, 2015, followed by his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against the same opponent on October 26, 2015. His career gained significant momentum in March 2017 when he achieved his maiden T20I five-wicket haul against Ireland, with figures of five wickets for three runs, marking the best bowling performance by an Afghan cricketer in a T20I. In June 2017, he delivered a remarkable performance against the West Indies, taking seven wickets for 18 runs, which was the fourth-best ODI bowling figure at the time and the first by an associate nation cricketer to take seven wickets. He became the youngest player to top the ICC Player Rankings for bowlers in ODIs in February 2018 and subsequently for T20Is later that month. In March 2018, he made history as the youngest player to captain an international side at 19 years and 165 days and became the fastest and youngest bowler to take 100 wickets in ODIs against the West Indies.
Rashid Khan continued to establish significant milestones, including becoming the first bowler for Afghanistan to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match in February 2019 against Ireland. Following the 2019 Cricket World Cup, he was appointed captain of the Afghanistan cricket team across all three formats, achieving a historic victory in his debut Test as captain against Bangladesh in September 2019, where he became the first cricketer to score a fifty and take a ten-wicket haul in his inaugural match as captain. He was named the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade in December 2020. Currently, he holds the record for the most wickets in Men’s Twenty20 International cricket, surpassing Tim Southee’s record of 164 wickets in September 2025.
