Retief Goosen was born in Polokwane (formerly Pietersburg), South Africa, and turned professional in 1990. Throughout his career, he has accumulated a total of 33 international wins, showcasing his consistent performance across different tours, including the European, Sunshine, and Asian Tours. His early career saw him secure victories such as the Iscor Newcastle Classic in 1991 and multiple wins in 1992, including the Spoornet Classic, Bushveld Classic, and Witbank Classic, demonstrating his early promise in professional golf. Goosen also achieved notable success in team events, winning the Dunhill Cup multiple times with Ernie Els and David Frost in 1997 and 1998, and the World Golf Championships-EMC World Cup with Ernie Els in 2001.
A significant period in Goosen’s career was his dominance on the European Tour, where he was crowned European Tour Number One in both 2001 and 2002. During this time, he clinched prestigious titles such as The Scottish Open at Loch Lomond and the Telefonica Open de Madrid in 2001, followed by the Johnnie Walker Classic and Dimension Data Pro-Am in 2002. His major championship success includes two U.S. Open victories, first in 2001 at Southern Hills and then again in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills, solidifying his status as one of golf’s elite players. He also continued to add to his international wins with the Volkswagen China Masters and Linde German Masters in 2005, and the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in 2007.
More recently, Retief Goosen has transitioned to the PGA TOUR Champions, where he continues to compete at a high level. He secured his first Senior Major Championship, the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, in 2019, marking his first victory in over-50s golf. He has since added to his PGA TOUR Champions wins with the Hoag Classic in 2022, The Galleri Classic in 2024, and the Sanford International in 2025. These achievements highlight his longevity and continued competitive spirit in professional golf, maintaining a strong presence in the sport across different age categories.
